Display or Newspaper Ads
A display ad needs to use the same basic design principles as a business card or any design. Visual impact, uncluttered and easy to read. Here are some examples once again of an effective visually stimulating design versus a boring and visually unappealing design.
The ad on the left grabs your attention, gets straight to the point, and doesn't try to include too much information. The ads on the right are cluttered with small low quality graphics or far too much small type. I know that I would not call the Rose City sign company based on this ad. They may not have designed the ad, but it is a direct reflection of their business and I wouldn't want them designing anything for me.
